What is Root Canal Treatment?

If you've been told you need a root canal, take a deep breath. Modern root canal treatment is one of the most predictable, comfortable procedures in dentistry. The pain people associate with 'root canals' is actually the infection inside the tooth, the procedure relieves that pain.

At Port Colborne Family Dentistry, Dr. Gaurav performs root canals using digital X-rays, modern rotary instruments and effective local anesthetic. Most patients tell us it felt no different than a regular filling.

What to Expect at Your Appointment

1

Numb the area

We make sure you're fully numb before we start. You shouldn't feel pain, just gentle pressure.

2

Clean the canal

We remove the infected tissue from inside the tooth, clean and shape the canals, then seal them.

3

Crown the tooth

Most root-canalled teeth need a crown afterwards to protect them. We'll explain the timing and options.

Why It Matters

  • Save your natural tooth
A successful root canal lets you keep your tooth for life, usually better than any replacement.
  • Stops the pain
The infection is the cause of the pain. Removing it brings relief, often the same day.
  • Predictable success
Modern root canals have over a 95% success rate when done well.

Who It's For

  • Severe, lingering toothache or sensitivity to hot/cold
  • Tooth pain that wakes you at night
  • A pimple or bump on the gum near a tooth
  • A tooth that's darkened or changed colour
  • A deep cavity or fracture exposing the nerve
