What is the Canadian Dental Care Plan?
The Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) is a federal program administered by Sun Life that helps Canadian residents without private dental insurance access affordable dental care. It launched in 2024 and now covers eligible Canadians of all ages, including seniors, adults, and children under 18.
At Port Colborne Family Dentistry, we proudly accept the CDCP and direct-bill Sun Life on your behalf. That means less paperwork for you, and most preventive and basic services are fully covered if you qualify.
CDCP Covered Services
The plan covers a wide range of preventive, restorative and emergency dental services:
- Routine exams, cleanings & polishing
- X-rays (bitewing & panoramic)
- Fluoride treatments & sealants
- Fillings (white & amalgam)
- Tooth extractions
- Root canal treatments
- Dentures (complete & partial)
- Crowns (with prior approval)
- Periodontal (gum) treatment
- Emergency pain relief
Eligibility
You may qualify for the CDCP if you meet all of these:
- Canadian resident filing taxes in Canada
- Annual family income under $90,000
- No access to private dental insurance
- Approved by Service Canada

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I have to pay anything upfront?+
If your adjusted family net income is under $70,000, the CDCP covers 100% of eligible costs. Between $70,000–$89,999, you'll pay a co-payment of 40–60%. We'll always tell you the exact cost before any treatment.
Do you direct-bill the CDCP?+
Yes, we submit claims directly to Sun Life on your behalf. You don't have to pay first and wait for reimbursement on covered services.
What if a treatment isn't covered?+
We'll discuss alternatives, payment options, or whether the treatment can wait. You'll never be surprised by a bill.
Can my kids use the CDCP here?+
Absolutely. Children under 18 from eligible families are covered. We're a family-friendly clinic and love seeing kids.
